Robert Edward Hart Museum, La Nef -A Poet's Hideaway – Souillac Mauritius.
Robert Hart, Mauritius' most celebrated poet and writer, was awarded the French Légion d'Honneur and the British OBE for his work - written in French and English.
Half Irish, half Mauritian, Hart was Souillac's most famous prodigy, as well as the first president of the Society of Mauritian Writers, and is still revered.
ROBERT EDWARD HART MUSEUM, LA NEF -A POET'S HIDEAWAY – SOUILLAC MAURITIUS.
The cliff-top home that now houses the Robert Edward Hart Museum was given to him by friends on his 50th birthday and was renovated in 2003. The original style of the cottage has been preserved and a collection of his personal belongings, manuscripts and books are back on display. La Nef (meaning 'the nave') overlooks a stunning beach, lashed by the ocean, and you can walk down to it. It's easy to see how a poet would be inspired in such splendid isolation.
